The Windrush generation brought many things to the British Isles when they arrived during the mid 20th century. Their most prominent and treasured import being music! ‘Rhythms of Windrush’ champions the sounds of Ska, Reggae, 2step and Calypso by fostering an environment where participants were given the tools and encouragement to construct music, influenced by the sounds and rhythms of the Windrush generation.

This project culminated in a performance, with the participants getting to play alongside the Contrast Steel Band, the Mixtones and Leicester Community Radio’s Dirksman. Use the hashtag #WindyRythms to explore online content.

Rhythms of Windrush Project

Rhythms of Windrush! A project developed by Opal22 Arts and Edutainment for budding singers, songwriters, music producers, and videographers. Aged between 16-25 years The project, which has been funded by the Arts Council England, saw the young people guide to create a live performance and video and this is what they came up with. We linked up with Pink Lizard to identify how the Rhythms of the Windrush through Ska and Calypso shaped what we hear today.
